Kings Hotel Wedding Buckinghamshire

Clare and Tom were married at St Dunstan’s in the parish of Monks Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The reception was held at the Kings Hotel.

The day was perfect the ideal weather. The Bride looked stunning. The bridal car, a 1940’s Bentley, completed the fairy tale wedding.

I was delighted to be there to capture there day.

A little about the Parish of Monks Risborough

The Parish of Monks Risborough is the oldest recorded Parish in England.

St Dunstan’s Church is the main Parish Church. They have a sister church is St Peter’s Chapel at Owlswick.

It is not known from which direction the English colonists came when they arrived in the area of the Chiltern hills to create their settlements, but St Dunstan’s is a well-established site by the Icknield Way. The parish is clearly identifiable with landmarks mentioned in a charter dated 903 AD, the earliest certified boundary in the Kingdom.

By 1346 the village was known as Monks Risborough – not because of the presence of a monastery, as the name would initially suggest, but because even earlier than 903, it had belonged to the monks of Christ Church, Canterbury. The name “Risborough” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon phrase meaning ‘the scrub-covered hills’.

Wedding Reception

Clare and Tom’s reception was held at the Kings Hotel in Stokenchurch, near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire .

The Kings Arms Hotel began life as the George, a 16th Century coaching inn.

Later called The George & Dragon, the inn stood on a rough track which Dick Turpin & Jack Shrimpton are believed to have frequented. Coaches would have broken their journeys for fresh horses and refreshments for the passengers.

In March 1660 King Charles II came to Stokenchuch, stopping at The George with both Queen Catherine and his paramour, Nell Gwynn. Charles thought the inn unfit for his Queen, who was accommodated in a tent on the common: he had no such qualms about Nell, and took her with him to the George.

Henceforth, the Inn was known as The Kings Arms and is now known affectionately as “The Kings”
